Cut from unimproved upland meadow while the plant is in flower and the pleated leaves still hold water in the morning. Dried flat at 40 °C so the leaf keeps its shape — crumbled leaf loses tannin fast, and the tannin is the whole point.

Traditional use

Traditionally taken through the cycle and around the change, and used as an astringent tea for a loose gut or as a wash.

Preparation

The preparation is half the drug

This drug wants 95 °C and 10 min. Water hotter or a cup left standing gives you a different drink, made from the same herb.

The leaflet below is the one that goes in the box. Unfold it for the steps and the timer; the cautions stay in view either way.

Steps

As printed on the box · 4 in sequence

  1. 01

    Measure

One to two teaspoons of cut herb per cup.

    1–2 tsp ≈ 2 g
  2. 02

    Pour

Freshly boiled water, straight over the herb.

    150 ml · 95 °C
  3. 03

    Steep

Ten minutes, covered. Longer than that and the tannin turns the cup harsh without adding anything.

  4. 04

    Take

Between meals, as a course of days rather than a single cup.

Cautions

Read before use

  • Not for use during pregnancy.
  • The tannins can bind other medicines — leave a gap of an hour either side.
  • Heavy, painful or changed bleeding needs a diagnosis before it needs a tea.
