Grown again around Bamberg, where liquorice was a field crop for centuries before the trade moved east. Lifted in the third autumn; younger root is thin and disappointingly bland.

Traditional use

Traditionally taken for the stomach, and added to cough teas both for its own effect and to make bitter mixtures drinkable.
